Hospitality

Journal Entry:

Perspectives are the different viewpoints people have about various issues. These issues can be social, economic, religious, or political. It is these perspectives that contribute to the distinctions between people. For example, many in the U.S. believe in the nuclear family system (parents and children). But here in Uganda, most follow the extended family system (grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and children).

People have reasons for their thoughts. Therefore, it is important to understand and see the logic behind different perspectives. We should not be quick to judge other viewpoints, especially when different from our own.

Perspectives normally influence ways of life as it drives people to practice what they believe. There are many contrasts between the ways of life here in Uganda and the U.S. One such difference I would like to highlight is hospitality.

Hospitality is the generous reception and friendly entertainment of guests or strangers. People have different views on how to treat guests, especially when they are strangers. In the U.S., it is typical to be suspicious of strangers. Children are advised to not even talk to strangers. This is due to the many kidnappings and other bad things that could happen at the hands of someone unfamiliar. In Uganda, however, I’ve observed that people have a welcoming attitude towards strangers.
