Integrating Into my New Spanish Community

Learning through the medium of Spanish is a curveball in itself. First, you have to try to understand what the teachers are saying behind those thick Castellano accents. Next, you have to translate the Spanish words to English for your own comprehension. Finally, you have to demonstrate your understanding by responding in Spanish and completing the assigned homework (which is also in Spanish). English now becomes your second spoken language and Spanish your first. The concept of it all seems difficult but, soon, I became very acclimated. The hardest part for me is getting past the thick accent and dealing with how fast they talk! Once I understand the Spanish being spoken, I am able to comprehend and respond. In Spain, I am taking clases de (classes of) Literatura (Literature), Gramática (Grammar), Historia y Cultura (History and Culture), and Conversación (Conversation).

Each day, I am learning more and loving Barcelona more every step of the way. This is really a life-changing experience, and I am glad I applied for this program (even if I did not really know what I was signing up for). Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I hope you also immerse yourself in a new culture one day.
