Visit West End, Brisbane

Introduction:

West End is an eclectic neighborhood in Brisbane and a cultural center. The neighborhood is a vibrant community comprised mostly of artists, students and immigrants. There are a lot of social services that started in West End to help the neighborhood.

What community need did I learn about?:

One of the needs frequently discussed on bulletin boards in West End is the desire to create more free kitchens in the neighborhood. There are many homeless people there, so residents have banded together to open kitchens at various spots in the neighborhood at different times each week. These kitchens offer free food to anyone who walks in, and they are greatly appreciated by the homeless.

Why does the community have this need?:

The community has this need because many of the less fortunate people that move to Brisbane are left with few resources with which to build a life for themselves. This can lead to poverty, and, in many cases, eventually homelessness. Because West End is known for its multi-culturalism and "hippie vibes," it has become a natural spot for community programs like the kitchens.
