Transatlantic Slavery from Ghana's Perspective

Discussions in class about the effects of colonialism are hotly debated, even though Ghana gained independence in 1957, more than half a century ago. The rippling consequences of colonialism and the slave trade it fostered are still felt across the continent today.

In 2019, the slave castles are largely preserved and serve as educational centers. Cape Coast Castle houses a plaque denoting former US President Barack Obama’s visit in 2009. Another plaque nearby the dungeon that held male slaves comments on the importance of remembrance: “In everlasting memory of the anguish of our ancestors. May those who died rest in peace. May those who return find their roots. May humanity never again perpetrate such injustice against humanity. We, the living, vow to uphold this.” Those sobering words guide Ghana and its visitors to this day.
