Getting Around in Rwanda

The buses are usually small, white, and rounded; I always think they are shaped like a loaf of bread!

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

In the bus, it can feel a little cramped, since you are often sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with your neighbor. The road is also extremely curvy, since it winds through the many hills of Rwanda. I get carsick easily, but as long as I look out the window, I am usually able not to feel nauseous. And the view out the window is stunning. You will often be looking dozens of miles out over hillsides or down valleys, all covered with beautiful green forest, or tilled into tidy fields for farming.

When I am in town, I usually take a bicycle taxi. I usually feel safe in them, despite the bustling streets, since the bikers go at a slow pace. I am usually discouraged from taking a motorcycle taxi, since they can drive faster and go as they please on the roads, not necessarily following traffic laws. Usually, the motorcycle taxis carry an extra helmet for their passengers. While the roads are a little more hectic than most American roads, you can keep yourself safe by staying alert and always watching your surroundings. And like anywhere else, it is not a good idea to text while crossing the street here!

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

As I have said before, bicycling is an important sport in Rwanda. I believe this is because of the many hills, here which pose an appropriate level of challenge for any cyclist! There is a famous Rwanda Cycling Team who I have seen training in the mornings.
