The Famous Paella

Introduction:

Spanish cuisine (one of my favorites) has a lot of history and tradition originating from centuries ago. The food preparation techniques have been perfected over time. Many people around the world visit Spain in hopes of trying the famous paella meal.

What food did I try?:

Paella (pie-ey-yah) is the most famous and well-known Spanish meal. It is a mixture of rice, meats and vegetables. There are several types of paella (around ten types); however, due to its historical significance, I will focus on the "Paella Valenciana" (Valencian Paella) which is known to be the original Paella. Valencia is a town in Spain known to be the birthplace of the paella.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I felt elated with joy when I took my first bite of paella in Spain. It felt like a dream come true - one of my favorite foods made in its country of origin! Coming from a Hispanic culture, rice is the main ingredient in my family's dishes, so I had some expectation on how it would taste; however, I was completely wrong about my expectations when I took a bite. Each bite was a blast of savory, salty, well-seasoned goodness.

How is the food prepared?:

The paella Valenciana is made with the following ingredients: dry rice, water, chicken, rabbit, "azafran" (saffron), artichokes, salt, olive oil, navy (white) beans, green beans, tomatoes and sweet paprika.
