Dia de los Difuntos

Why does the community have this tradition?:

People in Ecuador celebrate this tradition to remember the lives of their family members that have passed away. The custom for this holiday is to go to cemeteries and graveyards and set up elaborate decorations around the tomb of a loved one. After the family is done decorating, the tombstone is covered with flowers, guaguas de pan, colada morada, and other types of food and drink that the person liked when they were alive. While Dia de los Difuntos is meant to celebrate people's’ lives, it can still be a sad occasion for a lot of people, especially if their loved one passed away recently. Therefore, it would have been disrespectful to walk around and take pictures in the cemeteries. I don’t have any of my own pictures in the cemetery, so I found one on the internet instead.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Yes, people bring food, flowers and other regional elements to the graves. For example, Ecuador’s warm weather allows flowers to grow almost year-round, so flowers are very accessible and are used in almost every celebration here. Some cities also hold parades where many different characters march and promote a festive atmosphere.
