An interview with Darlyn, from Salto, Uruguay

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

My parents drive me, either by motorcycle or by car. I'm not allowed to go by myself, because the school is pretty far away from my house, about 13 kilometers.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

On weekends I eat at home, and on weekdays, I eat at school. My favorite food is milanesa de carne (a thin fried and breaded cutlet of beef) with mashed potatoes or a salad of lettuce, tomato, and cucumber.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

I speak Spanish. In Spanish we say ¡hola!

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

There are only 11 kids at our school, but my brother is named Benjamin and my dad is Michael, which are both common names. One girl at school is named Lucia, which is a popular name in Uruguay.

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

We study math, Spanish, science, and English. My favorite subject is math.

What is your homework like?:

Usually it's a worksheet for math and Spanish, and I have to answer the questions. If I don't know a word, I look it up in the dictionary. It takes me between half an hour and an hour to do my homework each night.

What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?:

I like to ride my bike or ride horses. Soccer is my favorite sport.

Who is your favorite famous person?:

I like the singer Ozuna.
