Before I left the United States to come to South Africa, I had a set of perceptions about the country. My perspective then might be something similar to yours!

I asked you this question during our first Zoom call: "When you think of South Africa, what do you think about? Lions roaming around freely? The safari grasses with the big trees from The Lion King movie?" If you said yes to any of those, don't feel bad because I thought about those things as well! However, once I got past all of the differences our two counties had, I was able to see all of the similarities! But of course, it did not just happen instantly overnight. It took me almost all eight months of living in that country to see those similarities because at first, I only saw the differences.

Do you remember when I showed you the pictures of the cities and had you guess whether it was from the U.S. or South Africa? It is easy to think about South Africa as being a wild safari with lions and huts everywhere because that is probably the only way you have seen South Africa presented on things such as television shows or movies.

Look at all the different pictures I posted within this journal entry.
