Reflections on Our Exchange Journey

Journal Entry:

Getting to know Sara and more about Sudan over the past few months has been an extremely eye-opening experience for me. I really can't think of two countries so far removed from one another over recent history. Because of this, our two countries are so deserving of this groundbreaking virtual exchange program. As with most situations, we learn more through human contact rather than media or content. This is exactly why I believe that  person-to-person exchanges are so important.

Talking with Sara and the Green Space English Club over the last few months has honestly been wonderful. Abby and I feel incredibly lucky to have been paired with someone like Sara who is so driven and involved in her community. I think her attitude is a force of positivity and empowerment to be reckoned with, and it serves as a powerful example to us all. Our two countries face such different issues, and it's important for us to take a step back and reflect on how this affects our daily lives.

Sometimes here in the United States, other countries' issues can seem like a world away. Connecting with Sara, and getting to hear about the issues in Sudan first-hand, have brought them closer to home for us. I think this is an integral part of our exchange program. As Americans, I think that our society can sometimes have a tendency to forget about the rest of the world.
