Reach the World
and Standardized Testing
In response to the 2002
No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), all students in grades 3-8
will be tested by the state in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
We realize that many students and teachers will be focused
on adjusting to the new test format and preparing for these
challenging exams.
Reach the World remains
committed to its mission of helping students appreciate and
understand the world we live in. However, we also want our
program to support what is happening in your classrooms. We
realize that test preparation in math and literacy will be
a large focus of your instruction, and therefore we would
like to highlight some ways in which Reach the World can aid
in this process.
- English Language Arts (ELA)
- Expose students to new vocabulary
- Teach students to strategically read headings and captions
to make predictions about a text
- Give students practice making text-to-self and text-to-world
connections
- Help students apply comprehension strategies such as
questioning and visualizing
- Teach students to read for specific information
- Challenge students to make inferences about what they
read
