Literacy

Design an Itinerary
Students will write research and outline possible sites for a traveler to visit on a trip to a foreign land. The itinerary will include sites of cultural and historical significance as well as places that interest the students, such as shops and restaurants, theaters and concerts, and local events or festivals.

Lasting Food
This activity will give students an understanding of how sailors prepare for a long voyage at sea. Because there is limited refrigeration on board, ships mostly carry food that will not spoil on a long voyage.

Sailor's Valentine
Sailors spend many months at a time on board ships. In their spare time, they develop skills, create objects, share stories, and sing songs. Sailors also make valentines as gifts for their families and special friends who are waiting at home for their safe return. Students will gain an understanding of how sailors maintained their traditions and connections to their loved ones when they were far away.

Mini-Lessons for Reading
Here you will find suggestions for mini-lessons that you can do using the materials on the Reach the World web site.

Sea Chest
The ship is the sailor’s home for a long period of time. Because the ship has limited space, sailors can only bring the belongings that are most important to them. These belongings were once packed into a wooden box called the sea chest. Students will learn the importance of prioritizing the things that are necessary for survival.

Sharing Cultures
This activity will help students understand that sailing ships can sometimes have a crew made of sailors from different parts of the world. They do not always share the same race, nationality, religion, or even language.
