Everyday Math

Both Reach the World and Everyday Math provide opportunities for real-life applications of mathematic skills and concepts. Making connections between the classroom and the real world can extend learning beyond the limits of a textbook, thereby making it more compelling and meaningful. Below are some examples of activities aligned with the major mathematics strands and the Journeys:

  • Students use the Logbooks to solve Everyday Math word problems about the weather.
  • Students track the weather and temperature of different places the travelers are, and compare the data with the weather and temperature in their home area.
  • Students use the diagrams of the boat to find the area and perimeter of different parts of the ship.
  • Teachers add names of students into their word problems and incorporate Reach the World vocabulary into your questions.
  • Students design surveys and use them to collect data from around the world on a given topic. They analyze the data and use it to create tables and graphs, to make predictions, and to draw conclusions. For example:
  • Water quality survey
    o Average temperature survey
o Water usage survey (comparing travelers to student water use)
o Survey of the price of a bottle of water around the world
  • Students use data from the website to compute statistics (mean, median, mode, range). For example:
o Calculate the average speed and mileage of the sailboat
o Calculate the average number of showers taken by the travelers per week
o Find the range of the price of a bottle of water
o Calculate rates, such as miles traveled per week
  • Students use data from the website to convert measurements.
o Calculate the travelers’ average mileage and convert it into kilometers.
o Calculate the gallons of water travelers’ use per week and convert it into liters.
  • Students use data from the website to reinforce graphing and measurement skills. For example:
o Use maps to measure distance and make to-scale conversions
o Use the travelers’ longitude and latitude measurements to plot points on a grid
